Screensavers in OS X

From: Kim Knuckey
Date: July 2002

I love your Mac OS X: The Missing Manual (April 2002, ninth printing). When I first got my new iMac, I couldn't understand the hype about OS X. I was pining for OS 9. But now the toolbar, dock, home window, and user accounts all make sense, and I appreciate the crashlessness of the new system. I guess you know this already, but just in case. . . . In OS 10.1.3, the "Gem in the Rough" you mention on page 191 doesn't work. When you open the Screen Savers folder, there are no icons inside. (I can't imagine where they've gotten to!) Thanks again for the manual.

Cheers,
Kim

Hi Kim,

Thanks for the kind words.

Actually, the screensaver pix are still there, even in 10.1.5. I can only guess that you've somehow burrowed into the wrong Library folder. (Remember, Mac OS X has a lot of them!) The one you want is in the System folder, right in your main hard-drive window:

Open System --> Library --> Screen Savers. Then Control-click one of the modules (Forest.slideSaver, for example), choose Show Package Contents from the pop-up menu, and presto--you're in! Open the Contents --> Resources folder to find the beautiful photos that make up the screensaver.

Hope this helps!

David
