Power Keys in Jaguar

From: Steve Barth

First let me say that I have been using your manuals for well over five years now (somehow the number eight comes to mind), since Macs for Dummies (That was you, wasn't it?), and they have been a lifesaver many a time.

So I am hesitant to send you what may come across as a complaint, but for the sake of clarity, I have to say that one piece of info in your Jaguar manual caused me a headache once or twice.

On page 688, under "Power Keys," it says that Command-Option-Power will put recent models to sleep. When I was having trouble with my iBook overheating to the point of the cursor freezing (there's a contradiction in jargon for you), this command re-induced Black Screen Syndrome, which had already been occurring. When I was talking to Apple about the problem, they said the command sounded more like one for shutdown, but was definitely not for putting a Mac to sleep.

Anyway, I just thought you might like to know this. Maybe the problem it caused only applies to my laptop, so it doesn't matter. But I wrote anyway, just in case.

Also, I should tell you that your info on keyboard control of the cursor, in combo with your info on the keyboard command for scrolling through applications (for quitting), both proved a lifesaver in the very same situation described above--many more times than the command caused confusion. So I thank you for that, immensely.

Sincerely,
Steve

I can see where the confusion lies. Actually, you should have used the second set of keystrokes on that page, where it says, "On keyboards without a Power key." What the heading should have said is, "On keyboards with an Eject key," which you definitely have.

The bottom line is that on your iBook, Command-Option-Eject is the correct keystroke for Sleep.

Hope this helps!

David
