I can't seem to find any straight information on DVD burning! Which software, what media, limitions and abilities of drives and the different media, etc. Is there a resource with up to date info that is Mac oriented?

I just bought a Pioneer A104 DVD burner for my G4 400 Mac. I am having a hard time finding the right software for it; it seems Apple does not want to sell me iDVD 2, and iDVD 1 is no longer available. Also, I am still runnning system 9.2 and iDVD 2 requires OS X.

As far as I know, iDVD works only with internal DVD burners, not add-ons. I'm afraid I'm not familiar with any third party software programs, either. Sorry to break the bad news. . . .

There really isn't much to iDVD once you've got it. There are a few pages in iMovie 2: The Missing Manual on the topic.
