Upgrade Missing Manuals?

From: Jerrold Korn
Date: October 2002

I purchased the Missing Manual for Mac OS X, knowing that it covers 10.1. Now I am going to be purchasing Jaguar over the weekend.

How different is 10.1 from 10.2, and will I need to purchase the new 10.2 Missing Manual? Do you have an "upgrade" program? I bought the first edition of the book in July and only now can I finally upgrade to OS X. Too much time has gone by for me to return the book. Is there anything you can do to help?

Jerrold

10.2 is extremely different from 10.1! Jaguar is, forgive the pun, a different animal. (Apple has marketed itself into a corner with this "Mac OS X" business, which is why it has only upgraded the decimal point. It's trying to stay below 11 for as long as possible.)

O'Reilly does offer 30 percent off the new edition of a book for anyone who owns the original edition. Of course, that's precisely the same discount you get at Amazon.com, so this one is your call.

A number of people have asked why I don't simply publish a little supplement that documents the differences between 10.1 and 10.2. It's a great idea, but these aren't inserts. Mac OS X: The Missing Manual, 2nd Edition is an absolutely massive, every-single-page sort of rewrite! I was hoping that maybe one or two chapters wouldn't even have to be laid out and copyedited again, but no such luck. This is, in essence, a new book.

My best advice: Sell the original edition as soon as you can, while it is still relatively current. :)
